Financial institutions remain a favorite target of cybercrooks to infiltrate and demand ransom payments. These ransomware attacks follow a familiar pattern, starting with a phishing emails aimed to trick unsuspected victims to click on a malicious link.
In some cases, phishing emails are targeted at specific employees inside an organization, such as CTOs (spear phishing). Once the ransomware is installed, the threat actors display a ransom note demanding payment in cryptocurrency (most of the time, bitcoin) within a few business days.
