Cobwebs Technologies’ Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals
2020 has brought with it critical global challenges and illustrated the level of cooperation needed for the promotion of a sustainable and resilient path for humanity. The Covid-19 pandemic in particular, alongside its economic and social implications, has made it clearer than ever before that businesses must step up and play a role in solving global problems. That is why Cobwebs Technologies has taken upon itself the commitment to do business responsibly and to actively work towards the achievement of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Technology companies are uniquely positioned in our ability to contribute to the tackling of global challenges, but when we do so, we must also assure that the use of technology is done in a way that mitigates human rights violations and assures privacy for all. This year, Cobwebs Technologies received its first Human Rights Quality Seal from CybeRighTech following a rigorous due diligence process ensuring that our policy and procedures are in compliance with universally recognized standards of Business and Human Rights. We have also adopted a new code of ethics and business conduct.
This year, we were also able to contribute to governments’ efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19, creating public-private partnerships while harnessing our industry-leading technology and methodologies. Through our technologies, we have helped our clients address a variety of additional global problems, including terrorism and illegal arms, trafficking in persons, and illegal fishing and wildlife trafficking violations.
The Sustainable Development Goals
In 2015, all United Nations member states adopted a plan of action titled “The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” At the core of the Agenda is a vision for a more equitable and peaceful world to be achieved by 2030, consisting of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 specific targets. The 2030 Agenda makes clear that in order for the SDGs to be met efforts must be taken towards their attainment not only from government and civil society but also from the business sector.
During the formulation of the SDGs, former United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon stressed the importance of the data revolution achieved through technological development in both attaining and measuring the SDGs. “The data revolution is giving the world powerful tools that can help usher in a more sustainable future,” he stated.
