Today’s gangs are known to be highly organized, similar to the way American Mafia families from the 1930s were organized and operated, which makes it hard to identify the various members and their connections.

The gangs are engaging in a wide range of organized criminal activities ranging from drug trafficking, human trafficking, and prostitution to money laundering, cybercrime, blackmail, and extortion. For law enforcement, the disbanding of gangs, the prosecution of the individual gang members, and ending their illicit activities have taken top priority. But understanding the operations and structure of the gangs as well as identifying the various members is very difficult since they operate under the radar and across jurisdictions.
