Evaluation

INTRODUCTION

The first publication focusing on the contribution of Cobwebs to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
2020 has brought with it critical global challenges and illustrated the level of cooperation needed for the promotion of a sustainable and resilient path for humanity. The Covid-19 pandemic, alongside its economic and social implication, has made it clearer than ever before that businesses must step up and play a role in solving global problems. In accordance with the times, Cobwebs Technologies has taken upon itself the commitment to do business responsibly and to actively work towards the achievement of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals. As a pilot, we implemented the CRT SDG Evaluation as a first step to comprehensively analyze our SDG exposure. This assessment represents our first deep dive and quantitative analysis of CRT SDG exposure. The results confirm much of what we expected and also identify new considerations and focus areas for further analysis. While the evaluation provides valuable first insights, we do not see it as being a fully developed approach to measure our SDG impacts. We strongly believe that all businesses stand to benefit by reviewing their SDG impacts and enabling greater potential contributions. Here at Cobwebs, we will continue to explore how we can contribute to the SDGs. We also encourage our industry peers and others to work together, with us, to promote cross-sector collaboration that will improve transparency on the SDGs and help shape comprehensive strategies to ensure their success.

THE SDG

The UN’s global SDGs are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve global political and economic stability. Through 17 bold commitments and 169 sub-targets, the goals seek to drive global action across social, environmental and economic development issues up until 2030. Each goal is interlinked, and they influence each other in many ways.

Since they were launched in 2015, the SDGs have come to represent a global call to action for stakeholders from all countries to address the greatest barriers facing society. Adopted by all 193 UN Member States, they provide the first ever globally consistent framework that unites governments, businesses and civil society to deliver positive change.

Businesses have a key role to play and the SDGs have provided a global platform for increasing stakeholder awareness of companies’ impacts on society. However, while they are an important tool for improving transparency and benchmarking, the SDGs were originally intended to support countries’ sustainable development.

Little to no guidance was available when they were launched on how businesses should measure and report on their SDG impacts.

As a result, companies have struggled to consistently translate the SDGs into tangible business activity. New guidance has emerged in recent years, including guidelines published in 2017 by the UN Global Compact and GRI on Business Reporting on the SDGs.

2018 also saw the launch of the World Benchmarking Alliance which aims to identify consistent benchmarks as an essential tool for measuring and comparing corporate performance on the SDGs.

Cobwebs Technologies’ Prioritized SDGs

Safety

Goal 16: Promote Peaceful and Inclusive Societies for Sustainable Development, Provide Access to Justice for All, and Built Effective, Accountable and Inclusive Institutions at All Levels

Prioritized targets:

16.1 Reduce all forms of violence and related death rates

16.2 End abuse, exploitation, trafficking and torture of children

16.4 Reduce illicit financial and arms flows

16.a Strengthen relevant national institutions’ capacity to prevent violence and combat terrorism and crime

For Cobwebs Technologies, promoting a peaceful and just world means first and foremost the embedding of human rights in our own practices, under the notion that every person has the right to be treated with dignity. While Cobwebs Technologies’ products are geared at promoting safe societies, we acknowledge the potential threats our products could pose to individual rights, as well as our responsibility to respect and uphold human rights. With that, Cobwebs Technologies underwent a rigorous due diligence process by CybeRighTech and developed a comprehensive human rights policy, relevant to product development, sales, contractual arrangements, and auditing mechanisms. Through this process, we were able to identify and mitigate risks of rights infringement and commit to values of accountability and transparency. Cobwebs Technologies also committed itself to prevent end-user misuse of its technology, both through assuring “Human Rights by Design” and through conducting due diligence of clients. Finally, we appointed a Chief Compliance and Ethics Officer, responsible for ongoing quality assurance in relation to human rights. Following this process, Cobwebs Technologies was granted a Human Rights Quality Seal. With Cobwebs Technologies’ main mission being using intelligence-enhanced security for a safer world, we conduct investigations in the fields of anti-terrorism and terror financing, cybercrime, drug trafficking, money laundering and more. We engage in pro-bono work with think tanks to advance research on anti-terrorism and combat terror financing, and with media outlets support investigations related to trafficking in persons, including the exploitation of children. Cobwebs offers free seminars and webinars accessible to investigators and organizations worldwide on issues including how to combat trafficking in persons on the dark web, financial crime investigations, and more. From a national institution’s perspective, Cobwebs Technologies’ products strengthen financial institutions, providing them with automated and enhanced due diligence and anti- money-laundering practices. Furthermore, we conduct webinars targeted towards law enforcement institutions and national security agencies related to operational security and protection from data breaches.

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 global pandemic, Cobwebs Technologies saw an opportunity to utilize its advanced investigative artificial intelligence-based technological solutions to limit the spread of the COVID-19 virus and its deleterious effects on societies and economies. Cobwebs Technologies developed a smart software tool with predictive abilities and has been collaborating with governmental authorities worldwide to develop models of potential spreads, identify hotspots, and support policymaking to curb the pandemic – all while using non-intrusive and privacy-respecting holistic solutions.
